Getting started with a physical fitness routine or new diet program can be very intimidating.  Especially, the first time you are making fitness a priority.  I hope to provide adults in this situation with some helpful tips and in the future we will tackle tips for getting our children into a new activity.  Even those of us that consider ourselves very fit and who are used to various training routines can become intimidated by new training programs.  This was true for me when I started Krav Maga years ago and more recently Crossfit.  My athlete friends have said the same was true for them with activities like Spartan Race and marathon running.  Any time we set a new big, hairy, audacious goal (bhag)  it can be intimidating.  Honestly, anything worth doing will be a little scary and is the sign you are setting a good goal.

  1. First, don’t go it alone.  Even if you can’t get a friend to join in you can have accountability.  One of the ways I do this is by joining Challenge Groups online.  As a Beachbody Coach and user I join online challenge groups using various programs.  This is a great way to train at home, on your time and still have a mentor (in your coach) and others going through the same thing to motivate you.  You could also do something as simple as telling friends and family what you are doing.  This way you have people checking in and asking how you are doing working towards your goals.
  2. Second, make sure your goals are measurable.  I like to set S.M.A.R.T goals with myself and others.  Every fitness challenge I join, begins with before pictures, measurements and weight/body fat percentage checks.  While, weight is not something I use as a measure of success anymore, for most of us starting out, it is a main goal of those first programs.  I know, I know.  You saw before pictures and started to tremble and sweat.  They are a great way of demotivating yourself through out the road bumps in training.  They show us where we started and at the end where we are now.
  3. You can eat your way out of any fitness program.  It is important to know what you are putting in your body.  Many people start to work out and then eat more because they feel they are earning it.  Every workout should have a meal plan that goes along with it.  Whether that plan is a diet or just healthy meal prep is up to use.  With Beachbody each program comes with a meal plan for me that I follow and combine with MyFitnessPal app on my phone.  I am a huge fan of Shakeology and the 21 day fix measurement system.
  4. Your will to change needs to out weigh your will to stay the same.  Ultimately, if you do not want to change you won’t.  There are times we all get discouraged and need a pep talk and that is what our coach, training or classmates are for.  You just need to want that new and improved you over the way things are now.
